1. Basics of Determinants

  • A determinant is associated only with a square matrix.
  • Only square matrices have determinants; rectangular matrices do not have determinants.
  • The notation |A|, det A, and Δ all mean determinant of A.

2. Expansion of a 3 × 3 Determinant

  • A determinant of order three can be expanded along any row or any column.
  • All six expansions give the same value.
  • For easier calculation, choose the row or column with maximum zeros.

3. Determinant Properties and Special Results

  • If A = kB for square matrices of order n, then |A| = k^n|B|.
  • This chapter uses determinants of order one, two, and three.
  • The determinant of a product is the product of determinants: |AB| = |A||B|.

4. Adjoint and Inverse of a Matrix

  • The adjoint of a square matrix is the transpose of the cofactor matrix.
  • For a 2 × 2 matrix, adj A is found by interchanging a11 and a22 and changing signs of a12 and a21.
  • The identity A(adj A) = (adj A)A = |A|I is fundamental.
