Topics in Bank Reconciliation Statement

1

Meaning and Need of BRS

  • BRS is a statement, not an account.
  • It is prepared periodically.
  • Its purpose is to find the causes of difference between the Cash Book balance and the Pass Book balance.
2

Causes of Difference Between Cash Book and Pass Book

  • Cheques issued but not yet presented for payment cause a difference because the bank records them later.
  • Cheques deposited but not yet collected by the bank cause a difference because the bank credits them later.
  • Amount directly deposited by customers into the bank increases the bank balance first, so the Cash Book balance becomes less than the Pass Book balance.
3

Rules for Preparing BRS

  • First check whether the given balance is favourable or negative overdraft.
  • If the balance is favourable, use the normal plus and minus items.
  • If the balance is an overdraft, write it in the Minus column because it is a negative balance.
