Meaning and Need of BRS
- BRS is a statement, not an account.
- It is prepared periodically.
- Its purpose is to find the causes of difference between the Cash Book balance and the Pass Book balance.
Causes of Difference Between Cash Book and Pass Book
- Cheques issued but not yet presented for payment cause a difference because the bank records them later.
- Cheques deposited but not yet collected by the bank cause a difference because the bank credits them later.
- Amount directly deposited by customers into the bank increases the bank balance first, so the Cash Book balance becomes less than the Pass Book balance.
Rules for Preparing BRS
- First check whether the given balance is favourable or negative overdraft.
- If the balance is favourable, use the normal plus and minus items.
- If the balance is an overdraft, write it in the Minus column because it is a negative balance.
