Key Topics to Revise

1

What Are Life Processes?

  • Life processes are maintenance functions that keep living organisms alive and functioning.
  • Movement — even at the molecular level — is a key indicator of life.
  • Viruses show no molecular movement until they infect a cell, which is why their 'life' status is debated.
2

Nutrition

  • Nutrition is the process by which organisms obtain food (energy and raw materials) from their environment.
  • Two main types: Autotrophic Nutrition and Heterotrophic Nutrition.
  • Autotrophs make their own food from simple inorganic substances using an external energy source (sunlight).
3

Respiration

  • Respiration is the process of breaking down food (glucose) to release energy for cellular activities.
  • First step (common to all): Glucose (6C) → Pyruvate (3C), occurring in the cytoplasm.
  • Aerobic respiration: Pyruvate is broken down in mitochondria using oxygen → CO₂ + H₂O + large amount of energy (ATP).
4

Transportation

  • Transportation is the movement of food, oxygen, water, minerals, and waste products within the body.
  • In humans, the circulatory system (blood, heart, blood vessels) and lymphatic system handle transportation.
  • Blood consists of: Plasma (transports dissolved food, CO₂, nitrogenous wastes, salts) + RBCs (carry O₂) + WBCs (immunity) + Platelets (clotting).
