4.1 Bonding in Carbon – The Covalent Bond

  • Carbon has atomic number 6 and electronic configuration 2, 4 – so it has 4 valence electrons.
  • Carbon cannot form C⁴⁻ (gaining 4 electrons would be difficult for the nucleus) or C⁴⁺ (losing 4 electrons requires too much energy).
  • Carbon overcomes this problem by SHARING electrons – forming COVALENT BONDS.

4.2 Versatile Nature of Carbon

  • Carbon forms millions of compounds due to two unique properties: CATENATION and TETRAVALENCY.
  • Catenation: Carbon's ability to bond with OTHER carbon atoms to form long chains, branched chains, or rings.
  • Tetravalency: Carbon has 4 valence electrons, so it can form 4 covalent bonds – with C, H, O, N, S, Cl and other elements.

4.2.5 Nomenclature of Carbon Compounds

  • Naming rule: Identify number of C atoms → use prefix (meth=1, eth=2, prop=3, but=4, pent=5, hex=6) + appropriate suffix.
  • Suffix for alcohols: –ol (e.g., methanol, ethanol, propanol).
  • Suffix for aldehydes: –al (e.g., methanal, ethanal, propanal).

4.3 Chemical Properties of Carbon Compounds

  • COMBUSTION: Carbon and its compounds burn in oxygen to produce CO₂, H₂O, heat and light. These are oxidation reactions.
  • Saturated hydrocarbons (alkanes) burn with a CLEAN BLUE flame.
  • Unsaturated hydrocarbons (alkenes, alkynes) burn with a YELLOW, SOOTY flame (incomplete combustion, black smoke).
