2.1 The Male Reproductive System

  • The male reproductive system is located in the pelvic region and consists of: a pair of testes, accessory ducts, accessory glands, and external genitalia (penis).
  • Testes are located outside the abdominal cavity in a pouch called the scrotum. The scrotum maintains temperature 2–2.5°C lower than body temperature, which is essential for spermatogenesis.
  • Each testis is oval-shaped, about 4–5 cm long and 2–3 cm wide, and is divided into approximately 250 testicular lobules.
2

2.2 The Female Reproductive System

  • The female reproductive system is located in the pelvic region and consists of: a pair of ovaries, a pair of oviducts (fallopian tubes), uterus, cervix, vagina, external genitalia, and mammary glands.
  • Ovaries are the primary female sex organs; they produce ova (female gametes) and ovarian hormones (estrogen, progesterone). Each ovary is about 2–4 cm in length.
  • Ovarian stroma is divided into peripheral cortex (contains follicles) and inner medulla.
3

2.3 Gametogenesis

  • Gametogenesis is the process of formation of gametes (sperms and ova) in the gonads.
  • SPERMATOGENESIS: Formation of sperms in seminiferous tubules of testes. Starts at puberty.
  • Spermatogonia (2n, 46 chromosomes) → Mitosis → Increase in number → Some become Primary spermatocytes (2n, 46 chromosomes).
4

2.4 Menstrual Cycle

  • The menstrual cycle is the monthly reproductive cycle in female primates (monkeys, apes, humans).
  • Menarche: First menstruation at puberty. Menopause: Cessation of menstruation around 50 years of age.
  • Average cycle length: 28–29 days. One ovum is released per cycle (during ovulation).
