  • A quadratic equation is an equation of degree 2 in one variable.
  • The standard form is ax^2 + bx + c = 0, where a, b, c are real numbers and a ≠ 0.
  • Any equation of the form p(x) = 0, where p(x) is a polynomial of degree 2, is a quadratic equation.

2. Roots and Factorisation Method

  • A root of a quadratic equation is a value of x that makes the equation true.
  • If a quadratic expression can be factorised into two linear factors, each factor can be set equal to zero.
  • Factorisation is often the fastest method when the quadratic is easily factorised.

3. Completing the Square

  • Completing the square transforms a quadratic equation into a perfect square form.
  • The method is useful when factorisation is difficult.
  • For ax^2 + bx + c = 0, first divide by a so that the coefficient of x^2 becomes 1.

4. Quadratic Formula and Discriminant

  • The quadratic formula gives the roots directly when b^2 - 4ac ≥ 0.
  • The discriminant D = b^2 - 4ac decides the nature of roots.
  • If D > 0, there are two distinct real roots.
