Key Topics to Revise

1

1. Similar Figures and Similar Triangles

  • Similar figures have the same shape but not necessarily the same size.
  • Two polygons of the same number of sides are similar if corresponding angles are equal and corresponding sides are in the same ratio.
  • A regular polygon has all sides and angles equal.
2

2. Basic Proportionality Theorem and Its Converse

  • Basic Proportionality Theorem is also known as Thales Theorem.
  • If a line is drawn parallel to one side of a triangle and meets the other two sides at distinct points, then those two sides are divided in the same ratio.
  • The converse is also true: if a line divides two sides of a triangle in the same ratio, then the line is parallel to the third side.
3

3. Similarity Criteria for Triangles

  • For triangles, one condition is enough: AA, SSS, or SAS similarity.
  • If two angles of one triangle are respectively equal to two angles of another triangle, the triangles are similar.
  • AAA similarity is effectively AA similarity because the third angle is automatically equal.
4

4. Areas of Similar Triangles

  • The ratio of the areas of two similar triangles is equal to the ratio of the squares of their corresponding sides.
  • If two similar triangles have equal areas, they are congruent.
  • Example 9: if areas are 64 cm^2 and 121 cm^2 and EF = 15.4 cm, then BC = 11.2 cm.
