1. Basic Solid Shapes and Their Formulas

  • Cuboid, cube, prism, cylinder, pyramid, cone, sphere, and hemisphere are the main solids studied in this chapter.
  • Each solid has fixed formulas for curved or lateral surface area, total surface area, and volume.
  • For a cuboid, all three dimensions are used: length, breadth, and height.

2. Surface Area and Volume of Combination of Solids

  • Many real objects are made by joining two or more basic solids.
  • In a combination of solids, surface area is not found by simply adding the TSAs of the parts.
  • Some faces disappear or overlap where the solids are joined.

3. Surface Area Examples and High-Yield Results

  • The slant height of a conical tent with r=7 m and h=10 m is √149 = 12.2 m.
  • The length of canvas used for the tent in Example-1 is 134.2 m for width 2 m.
  • The total surface area of a cylindrical oil drum in Example-2 is 50.28 m^2.

4. Volume Examples and Recasting Problems

  • The volume of a combined solid is the sum of the volumes of its parts.
  • Suresh's shed volume is 1128.75 m^3 without machinery and workers.
  • The volume of air in the shed with machinery and workers is 827.15 m^3.
