  • Surface area and volume are different and are used for different kinds of questions.
  • For a cone, slant height must be found before curved surface area is calculated.
  • Sphere has CSA and TSA equal to 4πr^2.
  • Find slant height first for cone problems.
  • Use curved surface area when only the side surface is painted or covered.
  • Use total surface area when the whole outside is exposed.
  • Only exposed surfaces are counted in combination solids.
  • For joined solids, hidden faces are not included.
  • Toy made of cone and hemisphere uses CSA of each exposed part.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Surface area and volume mean the same thing in word problems.

The total surface area of a combined solid is always the sum of the total surface areas of the parts.

For a toy made of a cone and a hemisphere, the area to colour is CSA of cone + TSA of hemisphere.
