Expansion of Democracy

Arab Spring

The Arab Spring refers to the revolutionary wave of demonstrations, protests, and wars that took place in the Arab world beginning in December 2010. It started in Tunisia and spread to Egypt, Libya, Yemen, Bahrain, and Syria among others. Libya's revolution was part of this broader movement for democracy across the Arab world.

1990

In 1990, Myanmar held elections where the National League for Democracy (NLD) led by Aung San Suu Kyi won a majority with 80% of the seats. However, the military refused to hand over power and kept Suu Kyi under house arrest. This showed that even when people voted for democracy, military rulers were not willing to give up power.

Socialist

Gaddafi declared Libya as the 'Socialist Libyan Arab Republic' and established a socialist system. This included nationalizing oil resources, providing free education and healthcare for all, and distributing oil profits among citizens. Socialist systems emphasize government ownership of major resources and focus on social welfare rather than private profit.

Benghazi

Benghazi was the center of major protests against Gaddafi in 2011. The city had poor civic amenities, high unemployment, and families without stable income. People marched against police, there was firing, and people were injured. While protests started in Bayda, Benghazi became the major center where people captured government buildings and the local radio station.
