Minimum wage and right to form trade unions

While Luddites are famous for machine-breaking, they had broader social demands. They wanted a minimum wage to ensure decent living standards, control over the labor of women and children to protect family structures, work for those who lost jobs due to machinery, and importantly, the right to form trade unions so they could legally present their demands. Machine-breaking was often a negotiating tactic - many factory owners agreed to better working conditions when threatened with damage to their equipment.

Society as a whole

Socialism calls for public ownership rather than private control of property and natural resources. According to socialist view, individuals don't live in isolation but in cooperation with each other. Everything people produce is a social product, so everyone who contributes to production has a right to share it. Therefore, society as a whole should own or control property for the benefit of all its members, not just a few wealthy individuals. This ensures fair distribution of wealth and power.

Capitalism allows private ownership, socialism supports public ownership

The fundamental difference lies in ownership of means of production. Capitalism is based on private ownership where individual capitalists own factories, land, and resources, and they decide what to produce and how to distribute profits. Socialism opposes this by calling for public ownership where society collectively controls these resources. Socialists argue that capitalism creates unfair distribution of wealth and power, giving everything to a few rich people while exploiting workers who actually produce goods.

Socialist thinkers who developed new theories

Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels were influential socialist thinkers who developed new theories of socialism based on their study of industrial capitalist production. They argued that capitalism was both progressive (enabling industrial transformation) and exploitative (forcing workers into extreme hardship while capitalists got the profits). They believed workers should organize themselves, take over factories and resources, and establish a worker's state that would plan production for everyone's benefit. Their ideas greatly influenced radical movements in the 20th century.
