Magnetic Field and Magnetic Field Lines
- A magnetic field is the region around a magnet where its influence (attraction or repulsion) can be felt.
- Magnetic field is denoted by B and its SI unit is Tesla (T).
- Magnetic field lines are imaginary curved lines used to represent the magnetic field visually.
Magnetic Effect of Current – Oersted's Discovery
- Hans Christian Oersted (Danish physicist) discovered in 1820 that a current-carrying conductor produces a magnetic field around it.
- He noticed that a compass needle near a current-carrying wire deflected when the circuit was switched on and off.
- This discovery proved that electricity and magnetism are related – leading to the birth of electromagnetism.
Force on a Current-Carrying Conductor in a Magnetic Field
- H.A. Lorentz discovered that a moving charge in a magnetic field (not parallel to it) experiences a force called Magnetic Lorentz Force.
- Since moving charges constitute current, a current-carrying conductor in a magnetic field also experiences a force.
- Michael Faraday (1821) showed experimentally that a current-carrying conductor placed in a magnetic field gets deflected.
Force Between Two Parallel Current-Carrying Conductors
- A current-carrying conductor has a magnetic field around it.
- When two current-carrying conductors are placed parallel to each other, each conductor is in the magnetic field of the other.
- Each conductor experiences a force due to the magnetic field of the other conductor.
