What to Focus On

  • Derivative is the rate of change of a function.
  • Defined using the limit of the difference quotient.
  • Notation: $ f'(x) $, $ \frac{dy}{dx} $, $ Df(x) $.
  • $ \frac{dy}{dx} $ gives the slope of the tangent to the curve.
  • When $ \frac{dy}{dx} = 0 $, the tangent is horizontal.
  • When $ \frac{dy}{dx} = \infty $, the tangent is vertical.
  • Derivative of any constant is zero.
  • Graphically, a constant function has zero slope.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

The derivative of a constant is the constant itself.

You can differentiate each part of a product separately and then multiply the derivatives.

The derivative of 1/x is ln|x|, just like integral.

Memory Tips

Definition of Derivative (First Principle)

Power Rule: d/dx(x^n) = nx^(n-1)

Derivative of Constant is Zero

Sum Rule: (f + g)' = f' + g'
