Topics in Differentiation

1

Introduction to Derivatives

  • The derivative of a function measures the rate at which the function value changes as its input changes.
  • Geometrically, the derivative of a function at a point gives the slope of the tangent line to the curve at that point.
  • The process of finding the derivative is called differentiation.
2

Geometric Interpretation of Derivatives

  • The derivative \( \frac{dy}{dx} \) represents the slope of the tangent to the curve \( y = f(x) \) at a point.
  • If the tangent is parallel to the x-axis, \( \frac{dy}{dx} = 0 \).
  • If the tangent is perpendicular to the x-axis, \( \frac{dy}{dx} = \infty \).
3

Derivative of Constant and Power Functions

  • Derivative of a constant function is zero.
  • Power Rule: If \( f(x) = x^n \), then \( f'(x) = nx^{n-1} \).
  • This rule applies for all real numbers \( n \), including fractions and negatives.
4

Algebra of Derivatives

  • Derivative of sum/difference is the sum/difference of derivatives.
  • Constant multiple rule: derivative of \( c \cdot f(x) \) is \( c \cdot f'(x) \).
  • Product Rule: \( (uv)' = u'v + uv' \).
