Key Topics to Revise

1

Types of Materials and Energy Band Theory

  • Materials are classified as conductors, semiconductors, and insulators based on resistivity and energy band structure.
  • In conductors, the valence and conduction bands overlap, allowing free electron movement.
  • In insulators, the forbidden gap is very large (>3 eV), so electrons cannot jump to the conduction band.
2

Intrinsic and Extrinsic Semiconductors

  • Pure semiconductors like Si and Ge are intrinsic — they have equal numbers of electrons and holes generated by thermal energy.
  • Extrinsic semiconductors are doped with impurities to increase conductivity.
  • n-type semiconductors are doped with pentavalent atoms (e.g., P, As), adding extra electrons.
3

p-n Junction and Diode Characteristics

  • A p-n junction is formed by joining p-type and n-type semiconductors.
  • Due to diffusion, electrons and holes recombine near the junction, forming a depletion region with no mobile carriers.
  • Fixed donor and acceptor ions create a barrier potential (~0.7 V for Si, ~0.3 V for Ge).
4

Special Diodes and Applications

  • Zener diode is heavily doped and used in reverse bias for voltage regulation.
  • Photodiode detects light and operates in reverse bias — current increases with light intensity.
  • LED emits light in forward bias — used in displays and indicators.
