1. Historical Basis of Classification
- Aristotle was the earliest scientist to attempt a scientific basis for classification.
- He classified plants into trees, shrubs and herbs.
- He classified animals into red-blooded and non-red-blooded groups.
2. Kingdom Monera
- Bacteria are the sole members of Kingdom Monera.
- Bacteria are the most abundant microorganisms and occur almost everywhere.
- Bacteria show the most extensive metabolic diversity among many organisms.
3. Kingdom Protista
- All single-celled eukaryotes are placed under Protista.
- The boundaries of Protista are not well defined.
- Protista includes Chrysophytes, Dinoflagellates, Euglenoids, Slime moulds and Protozoans.
4. Kingdom Fungi
- Fungi are a unique kingdom of heterotrophic organisms.
- With the exception of yeasts, fungi are filamentous.
- The body of a fungus consists of hyphae, and the network of hyphae is called mycelium.
