Key Topics to Revise
Chemical Composition of Living Tissues
- Living tissues and non-living matter contain many of the same elements, but carbon and hydrogen are relatively more abundant in living organisms.
- Chemical analysis of tissue separates compounds into an acid-soluble pool and an acid-insoluble fraction.
- The acid-soluble pool contains compounds with molecular weights from 18 to around 800 daltons.
Primary and Secondary Metabolites
- Primary metabolites are compounds such as amino acids, sugars, fatty acids, glycerol, nucleotides, nucleosides, and nitrogen bases.
- Secondary metabolites are compounds such as rubber, gums, cellulose, alkaloids, flavonoids, essential oils, antibiotics, coloured pigments, scents, and spices.
- Primary metabolites have direct roles in normal physiological processes.
Amino Acids and Proteins
- Amino acids are organic compounds containing an amino group and an acidic carboxyl group as substituents on the same α-carbon.
- Amino acids are substituted methanes with four groups attached to the α-carbon: hydrogen, carboxyl group, amino group, and R group.
- Only 20 types of amino acids occur in proteins.
Lipids
- Lipids are generally water insoluble.
- Fatty acids have a carboxyl group attached to an R group.
- The R group of fatty acids may range from 1 to 19 carbons.
