Key Topics to Revise
1. Types of Movement
- Human cells show three main types of movement: amoeboid, ciliary, and muscular.
- Amoeboid movement is shown by macrophages and leucocytes. It occurs by pseudopodia formed through streaming of protoplasm.
- Ciliary movement occurs in ciliated tubular organs. In the trachea, cilia help remove dust particles and foreign substances.
2. Muscle: Structure and Types
- Muscle is a specialised tissue of mesodermal origin.
- About 40-50% of adult human body weight is made up of muscles.
- Muscles show four properties: excitability, contractility, extensibility, and elasticity.
3. Structure of Myofibril and Sarcomere
- A myofibril shows alternate dark and light bands.
- The light band is the I band and contains actin.
- The dark band is the A band and contains myosin.
4. Contractile Proteins
- Actin is the thin filament protein.
- Each actin filament is made of two F actins helically wound together.
- Each F actin is a polymer of G actins.
