1. Endocrine System: Basic Ideas
- Endocrine glands lack ducts and are therefore called ductless glands.
- Hormones are non-nutrient chemicals which act as intercellular messengers and are produced in trace amounts.

- The hypothalamus is the basal part of the diencephalon in the forebrain.
- Hypothalamic hormones are of two types: releasing hormones and inhibiting hormones.

3. Pineal, Thyroid, Parathyroid, and Thymus
- The pineal gland is located on the dorsal side of the forebrain.
- Pineal secretes melatonin.
- Melatonin regulates a 24-hour diurnal rhythm.
4. Adrenal Gland
- Each adrenal gland lies above a kidney.
- The adrenal gland has an outer adrenal cortex and a central adrenal medulla.
- The adrenal medulla secretes adrenaline and noradrenaline.
