1. Meaning of Communication
- Communication is the process of transferring information or content from a sender to a receiver with the use of a medium.
- The word communication comes from the Latin word communis meaning common.
- Effective communication means that the sender and receiver understand the intended meaning in the same way.
2. Classification of Communication
- Communication can be classified based on type of interaction, levels, means or modes, and number of senses involved.
- One-way communication means information flows only from sender to receiver and immediate response is not possible.
- Two-way communication means ideas and information are exchanged between two or more people.
3. Process of Communication and the SMCRE Model
- Communication is a process with a definite sequence.
- The sequence is: who says what to whom, when, in what manner, under what circumstances, and with what effect.
- The SMCRE model describes the elements of communication as Source, Message, Channel, Receiver, and Effect.
4. Media and Its Functions
- Media is the means that uses various methods of communication for disseminating and sharing ideas, thoughts, feelings, innovations, and experiences.
- Mass media uses modern technology, but the presence of technology does not always mean mass communication is taking place.
- Mass media is meant for heterogeneous, anonymous, and large audience groups.
