- Fibre is the basic building block of fabrics and is a tiny fine hair-like structure.
- Yarn is a continuous strand of textile fibres, filaments, or material suitable for knitting, weaving, or intertwining.
- Fabric is the final textile product made mainly from yarns by weaving or knitting, or directly from fibres in felts and non-wovens.
2. Classification of Textile Fibres
- Textile fibres are classified by origin, chemical type, generic type, and trade name.
- There are four types of natural fibres: cellulosic, protein, mineral, and natural rubber.
- Natural cellulosic fibres include seed hair, bast fibres, leaf fibres, and nut husk fibres.
3. Yarn Processing and Yarn Terms
- Natural staple fibres are converted into yarn through spinning.
- Yarn processing includes cleaning, making into a sliver, attenuating, drawing out, twisting, and spinning.
- Cleaning removes impurities such as seeds, leafy matter, twigs, and suint.
4. Fabric Production Methods
- Most fabrics are made from yarns, but felts and non-wovens are made directly from fibres.
- Weaving is the oldest form of textile art and was originally used for making mats and baskets.
