Topics in Probability

1

1. Events and Sample Space

  • The sample space serves as a universal set for all questions concerned with the experiment.
  • An event E is said to have occurred if the outcome ω of the experiment satisfies ω ∈ E.
  • Any subset E of a sample space S is called an event.
2

2. Algebra of Events

  • The complementary event A' is the event 'not A'.
  • The complementary event A' equals S - A.
  • The event 'A or B' is defined as the union A ∪ B.
3

3. Axiomatic Approach to Probability

  • The probability P is a real-valued function whose domain is the power set of S and range is [0,1].
  • For any event E, P(E) ≥ 0.
  • P(S) = 1.
4

4. Probability of Equally Likely Outcomes

  • For equally likely outcomes, P(ωi) = 1/n where n is the number of sample points.
  • If n(S) = n and n(E) = m, then P(E) = m/n.
  • Probability of an event is the number of favourable outcomes divided by the total number of outcomes, when all outcomes are equally likely.
