1. Basic Idea of a Set

  • A set is a well-defined collection of objects.
  • Objects, elements, and members of a set mean the same thing.
  • Sets are usually written using capital letters such as A, B, C, X, Y, Z.

2. Representation of Sets

  • There are two main ways to represent sets: roster form and set-builder form.
  • In roster form, all elements are listed inside braces and separated by commas.
  • In set-builder form, the common property of all elements is written.

3. Empty, Finite, and Infinite Sets

  • A set with no element is called the empty set, null set, or void set.
  • The empty set is denoted by φ or { }.
  • A set is finite if it is empty or has a definite number of elements.

4. Equal Sets and Subsets

  • Two sets are equal if they have exactly the same elements.
  • A set is unchanged if elements are repeated in roster form.
  • A set A is a subset of B if every element of A is also an element of B.
