Topics in Conic Sections
1. Conic Sections and Their Classification
- A conic section is obtained when a plane cuts a double-napped right circular cone.
- The vertex is the fixed point where the generator meets the axis of the cone.
- The cone has two nappes, and the type of curve depends on how the plane cuts the cone.
2. Circle
- A circle is the set of all points in a plane equidistant from a fixed point.
- The fixed point is the centre and the fixed distance is the radius.
- The equation of a circle with centre (h, k) and radius r is (x - h)^2 + (y - k)^2 = r^2.
3. Parabola
- A parabola is the set of all points equidistant from a fixed line called the directrix and a fixed point called the focus.
- The axis of a parabola passes through the focus and is perpendicular to the directrix.
- The vertex is the point where the parabola meets its axis.
4. Ellipse
- An ellipse is the set of all points whose sum of distances from two fixed points is constant.
- The two fixed points are the foci.
- The midpoint of the foci is the centre.
