1. Conic Sections and Their Classification

  • A conic section is obtained when a plane cuts a double-napped right circular cone.
  • The vertex is the fixed point where the generator meets the axis of the cone.
  • The cone has two nappes, and the type of curve depends on how the plane cuts the cone.

  • A circle is the set of all points in a plane equidistant from a fixed point.
  • The fixed point is the centre and the fixed distance is the radius.
  • The equation of a circle with centre (h, k) and radius r is (x - h)^2 + (y - k)^2 = r^2.

3. Parabola

  • A parabola is the set of all points equidistant from a fixed line called the directrix and a fixed point called the focus.
  • The axis of a parabola passes through the focus and is perpendicular to the directrix.
  • The vertex is the point where the parabola meets its axis.

4. Ellipse

  • An ellipse is the set of all points whose sum of distances from two fixed points is constant.
  • The two fixed points are the foci.
  • The midpoint of the foci is the centre.
