What to Focus On

  • Sample space is the set of all possible outcomes.
  • Any subset of the sample space is an event.
  • An event occurs when the observed outcome belongs to that subset.
  • φ is the impossible event.
  • S is the sure event.
  • A simple event contains exactly one sample point.
  • A' = S − A.
  • A or B means A ∪ B.
  • A and B means A ∩ B.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

An event is the same thing as one outcome.

The empty set is not an event, and the whole sample space is not an event.

Any two different events are mutually exclusive.

Memory Tips

Event as a subset of sample space

Impossible event and sure event

Simple event and number of simple events

Compound event
