What to Focus On

  • A set is a well-defined collection of objects.
  • ∈ means belongs to; ∉ means does not belong to.
  • Roster form lists elements; set-builder form states the property.
  • Empty set has no elements.
  • Empty set is denoted by φ or { }.
  • Finite sets have a definite number of elements.
  • Two sets are equal if they have exactly the same elements.
  • A ⊂ B means every element of A is in B.
  • Every set is a subset of itself.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

An element and a subset mean the same thing.

The empty set is not a subset of any set because it has no elements.

If A ∈ B and B ⊂ C, then A ⊂ C must be true.

Memory Tips

A set is a well-defined collection of objects

A collection that is not well-defined is not a set

Roster form means listing elements, order does not matter

Repeated elements do not change a set
