Formulas and Key Relations

2. Stress, Strain, and Sign Convention

Magnitude of the stress = F/A

Longitudinal strain = ΔL/L

Shearing strain = Δx/L = tan θ

Volume strain = ΔV/V

3. Hooke's Law and Stress-Strain Curve

stress = k × strain

4. Elastic Moduli

Y = σ/ε = (F/A)/(ΔL/L) = (F × L)/(A × ΔL)

G = (F/A)/(Δx/L) = (F × L)/(A × Δx)

G = (F/A)/θ = F/(A × θ)

σs = G × θ

B = -p/(ΔV/V)

Key relations

Longitudinal strain = ΔL/L, shearing strain = Δx/L = tan θ, and volume strain = ΔV/V.
