  • Plasticity is the property of a body to retain the deformed shape permanently.

2. Hooke’s law and stress-strain curve

  • Hooke’s law states that for small deformations, stress is proportional to strain.
  • Hooke’s law is empirical and valid for most materials, but not for all materials.

  • Young’s modulus is the ratio of tensile or compressive stress to longitudinal strain.
  • It applies only to solids.
  • Its unit is the same as stress, N/m^2 or pascal, because strain has no unit.

  • Shear modulus is the ratio of shearing stress to shearing strain.
  • It is also called modulus of rigidity.
  • Shear modulus applies only to solids.
