1. Basic ideas: elasticity, plasticity, stress and strain
- Elasticity is the property of a body to regain its original size and shape after the deforming force is removed.
- Plasticity is the property of a body to retain the deformed shape permanently.
- Putty and mud are close to ideal plastics.
2. Hooke’s law and stress-strain curve
- Hooke’s law states that for small deformations, stress is proportional to strain.
- Hooke’s law is empirical and valid for most materials, but not for all materials.
- Hooke’s law is valid only in the linear part of the stress-strain curve.
3. Young’s modulus
- Young’s modulus is the ratio of tensile or compressive stress to longitudinal strain.
- It applies only to solids.
- Its unit is the same as stress, N/m^2 or pascal, because strain has no unit.
4. Shear modulus and bulk modulus
- Shear modulus is the ratio of shearing stress to shearing strain.
- It is also called modulus of rigidity.
- Shear modulus applies only to solids.
