Environment and Society

Ecology means the web of physical and biological systems and processes of which humans are one part. It includes mountains, rivers, plains, oceans, plants, animals, and the relations among them. In simple words, ecology is the natural setting in which living beings, including humans, exist and interact.

Ecology is not limited only to the forces of nature because it is also changed by human action. People modify rivers, forests, soils, climate, and landscapes through activities like deforestation, farming, building dams, industrialisation, and urbanisation. So what looks natural is often partly shaped by society.

Social environments emerge through a two-way process between nature and society. On the one hand, nature shapes society: for example, fertile plains support intensive agriculture and dense settlements, while deserts support pastoral life. On the other hand, society shapes nature through human interventions such as farming, building cities, cutting forests, and using technology. Thus, social environments are formed by the interaction of biophysical ecology and human action.

Social organisation shapes the relationship between environment and society because it determines how natural resources are used, controlled, and shared. Property relations decide who has access to land, forests, and water. The division of labour affects how men and women, landowners and labourers, relate differently to resources. Social values and norms also matter: capitalism turns nature into commodities, while other value systems may encourage conservation or redistribution. So environment-society relations depend on power, ownership, work, and values in society.

Environmental management is a complex and huge task because we do not know enough about biophysical processes to predict and control them fully. Also, human relations with the environment have become very complex due to industrialisation, rapid resource extraction, and sophisticated technologies. These systems are often fragile and can fail, causing accidents and disasters. Since many environmental problems are also linked with social inequality and conflicting interests, managing them becomes even more difficult.
