Card 1Carbohydrates

What is the general definition of carbohydrates?

Answer

Carbohydrates are optically active polyhydroxy aldehydes or ketones, or compounds that produce such units on hydrolysis. General formula: Cx(H2O)y. Example: glucose = C6H12O6 = C6(H2O)6.

Card 2

Answer

Card 3

Answer

Card 4Carbohydrate classification

How are carbohydrates classified on the basis of hydrolysis?

Answer

1. Monosaccharides: cannot be hydrolysed further. 2. Oligosaccharides: give 2 to 10 monosaccharide units on hydrolysis. 3. Polysaccharides: give a large number of monosaccharide units on hydrolysis.

Card 5Reducing sugars

Why are all monosaccharides reducing sugars?

Answer

All monosaccharides, whether aldoses or ketoses, are reducing sugars because they can reduce Fehling's solution and Tollens' reagent. Their carbonyl form is available in solution through equilibrium.

Card 6

Answer

Card 7

Answer

Card 8Disaccharides

What is the balanced equation for hydrolysis of sucrose?

Answer

C12H22O11 + H2O →(H+) C6H12O6 + C6H12O6 Sucrose + water gives glucose + fructose. This is a hydrolysis reaction.
