Key Topics to Revise

1

Perfect competition and price-taking behaviour

  • Perfect competition has four defining features: a large number of buyers and sellers, a homogenous product, free entry and exit, and perfect information.
  • These features create price-taking behaviour.
  • A price-taking firm cannot sell at a price above the market price.
2

Revenue concepts

  • Total revenue equals price multiplied by quantity sold.
  • Average revenue equals total revenue per unit of output and equals the market price for a price-taking firm.
  • Marginal revenue is the increase in total revenue when output rises by one unit.
3

Profit maximisation conditions

  • Profit is total revenue minus total cost.
  • Profit is maximum where MR = MC.
  • For a perfectly competitive firm, this becomes P = MC.
4

Shut-down point and break-even point

  • The short-run shut-down point is where SMC cuts AVC at its minimum.
  • Below this point, output becomes zero in the short run.
  • In the long run, the shut-down point is the minimum of the LRAC curve.
