Perfect competition and price-taking behaviour
- Perfect competition has four defining features: a large number of buyers and sellers, a homogenous product, free entry and exit, and perfect information.
- These features create price-taking behaviour.
- A price-taking firm cannot sell at a price above the market price.
Revenue concepts
- Total revenue equals price multiplied by quantity sold.
- Average revenue equals total revenue per unit of output and equals the market price for a price-taking firm.
- Marginal revenue is the increase in total revenue when output rises by one unit.
Profit maximisation conditions
- Profit is total revenue minus total cost.
- Profit is maximum where MR = MC.
- For a perfectly competitive firm, this becomes P = MC.
Shut-down point and break-even point
- The short-run shut-down point is where SMC cuts AVC at its minimum.
- Below this point, output becomes zero in the short run.
- In the long run, the shut-down point is the minimum of the LRAC curve.
