1. Living and Non-living Things

  • Living beings show movement, nutrition, growth, respiration, excretion, response to stimuli, reproduction, and death.
  • Movement alone does not make something living. A car can move but is non-living.
  • A living being that cannot show all characteristics even when food, air, and water are available is considered dead.

2. Characteristics of Living Beings

  • Movement is seen in animals and also in plants in different forms.
  • Plants show movement by flower opening, Drosera trapping insects, touch-me-not folding leaves, and climbers winding around objects.
  • Nutrition is needed for growth and development.

3. Seed Germination

  • The outer covering of a seed is called the seed coat.
  • Water softens the seed coat and helps the embryo develop into a plant.
  • Seeds use air present in the spaces between soil particles for germination.

4. Growth and Movement in Plants

  • When a plant is kept upright, the root grows downward and the shoot grows upward.
  • When a plant is kept inverted, the root bends and grows downward and the shoot bends and grows upward.
  • When light comes from one direction, the shoot grows toward light while the root continues growing downward.
