1. Objects, Materials and Classification
- Any substance used to create an object is called a material.
- Materials are types of matter used in the making of objects.
- An object may be made of one material or many materials together.
2. Appearance of Materials
- Materials can look different from one another.
- Materials that have shiny surfaces are said to have lustre.
- Metals such as iron, copper, zinc, aluminium and gold are lustrous materials.
3. Hardness and Softness
- Materials that can be compressed or scratched easily are soft.
- Materials that are difficult to compress or scratch are hard.
- Hard and soft are relative properties, so comparison is important.
4. Transparent, Translucent and Opaque Materials
- Materials through which things can be seen clearly are transparent.
- Glass, water, air and cellophane paper are transparent materials.
- Materials through which objects can be seen but not clearly are translucent.
