1. Measuring Length

  • Length can be measured using body parts, but body-based units are non-standard because they differ from person to person.
  • Handspan is also called balisht.
  • Examples of body-based measurement include arm length, strides, feet, fist, and fingers.

2. Reference Point, Rest, and Motion

  • Distance or position is described with respect to a fixed object or point called a reference point.
  • Whether an object is at rest or in motion depends on the reference point chosen.
  • An object is in motion if its position changes with respect to the reference point with time.

3. Types of Motion

  • When an object moves along a straight line, its motion is called linear motion.
  • Examples of linear motion include a car on a straight road, a falling orange, a parade march-past, and a pushed box.
  • When an object moves along a circular path, its motion is called circular motion.
