Activity 1.1: Question the Answer

1Come up with a curious, creative, and fun question that could lead to the answer: 'Just add some milk.'Show solution
Given: The answer is 'Just add some milk.'

This is an open-ended creative activity. There is no single correct question. The idea is to think imaginatively about situations where this answer would make sense.

Some possible questions:

(i) 'My porridge has become too thick and lumpy — what should I do?'

(ii) 'How can I make this cup of tea less bitter and more creamy?'

(iii) 'The mashed potatoes are too dry and stiff — how do I fix them?'

(iv) 'My little sister refuses to drink her Horlicks because it tastes too strong — what can I do?'

Note: Any creative, thoughtful question that logically leads to the answer 'Just add some milk' is perfectly acceptable. The purpose of this activity is to practise thinking like a scientist — by asking good questions rather than only finding answers.
2Come up with a curious, creative, and fun question that could lead to the answer: 'Because the cat's teeth were crooked.'Show solution
Given: The answer is 'Because the cat's teeth were crooked.'

This is an open-ended creative activity. There is no single correct question. Think of funny, imaginative, or even absurd situations where this answer would fit.

Some possible questions:

(i) 'Why did the cat's bite leave such a strange zigzag mark on the butter?'

(ii) 'Why did the dentist open a clinic especially for cats in our neighbourhood?'

(iii) 'Why did the cat keep dropping the fish it caught from the pond?'

(iv) 'Why did the vet say the cat needed braces?'

Note: Any imaginative question that logically or humorously leads to the answer 'Because the cat's teeth were crooked' is perfectly valid. The goal is to practise creative and scientific thinking.
3Come up with a curious, creative, and fun question that could lead to the answer: 'Don't panic, I have my towel.'Show solution
Given: The answer is 'Don't panic, I have my towel.'

This is an open-ended creative activity. Think of adventurous, funny, or unexpected situations where carrying a towel would be the solution.

Some possible questions:

(i) 'We are stranded on a deserted island with no supplies — what do we do now?'

(ii) 'It has started raining heavily and we are far from home with nothing — how will we manage?'

(iii) 'The spaceship has crash-landed on an unknown planet and we have lost all our equipment — are we prepared at all?'

(iv) 'We jumped into the lake on a dare and now have nothing to dry ourselves with — what will we do?'

Note: This answer is also a famous reference from the book 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' by Douglas Adams, where a towel is described as the most useful thing an interstellar traveller can carry. Any creative question is welcome.
4Come up with a curious, creative, and fun question (not an obvious mathematical one like 'What is 32+10?' or 'What is the answer to life, the universe, and everything?') that could lead to the answer: '42'Show solution
Given: The answer is '42.'

This is an open-ended creative activity. The instruction specifically asks us NOT to ask obvious questions like 'What is 32 + 10?' or 'What is the answer to life, the universe, and everything?' (the famous reference from Douglas Adams). Think of original, interesting situations.

Some possible creative questions:

(i) 'How many times did Grandma stir the dal before she said it was perfectly cooked?'

(ii) 'If a snail travels 6 cm every minute, how many centimetres will it travel in 7 minutes?' (Here the answer is 6×7=426 \times 7 = 42, but the situation is creative.)

(iii) 'How many spots does the most spotty dalmatian in the world have on just its left side?'

(iv) 'My grandfather says he has been waiting for the perfect mango for how many years of his life?'

Note: The key lesson of this entire activity is that in science, asking a good question is just as important — sometimes even more important — than finding an answer. Great discoveries begin with great questions!
