1. Pressure and Its Meaning
- Pressure is defined as force per unit area.
- Only forces acting perpendicular to the surface are considered at this stage.
- A smaller area of force application gives higher pressure.
2. Pressure in Liquids
- Liquids exert pressure not only at the bottom of a container but also on its sides.
- Liquids exert pressure in all directions.
- The pressure exerted by a liquid depends on the height of the liquid column.
3. Air Pressure and Atmosphere
- The atmosphere is the envelope of air surrounding the Earth.
- The atmosphere contains nitrogen, oxygen, argon, carbon dioxide, and other gases in small quantities.
- The atmosphere extends many kilometres above the Earth's surface.
4. Formation of Wind
- Air moves from a region of high air pressure to a region of low air pressure.
- The speed of escaping air is higher when the pressure difference is higher.
- When land heats faster than water during the day, air above land rises and sea breeze blows from sea to land.
