- So, economics refers to household management.
- The discipline of Economics deals with how choices are made by optimising the use of limited resources to satisfy the needs and wants.
2. Needs, Wants, and Scarcity
- Needs are essentials such as food, water, and shelter.
- Wants are things like gadgets, vacations, and luxury items.
- Human wants are unlimited and keep changing; for instance, people may want to upgrade from a bicycle to a motorbike and then to a car.
3. Opportunity Cost and Production Possibility Curve
- When one alternative is chosen, the other options are given up.
- The value of what is given up is known as opportunity cost.
- The opportunity cost of producing sugarcane is the forgone gains from saved water and improved soil health.
4. Three Key Questions in Economics
- There are three key questions in economics: what to produce, how to produce, and for whom to produce.
- What to produce asks which goods and services should be produced and in what quantities.
- For whom to produce asks who will benefit from the goods and services produced.
