Topics in Chemical Reactions and Equations

1

Chemical Equations – Writing and Balancing

  • A chemical reaction is identified by: change in state, change in colour, evolution of a gas, or change in temperature.
  • A word equation shows reactants on the left-hand side (LHS) and products on the right-hand side (RHS), separated by an arrow (→).
  • A chemical equation uses chemical symbols and formulae instead of names of substances.
2

Types of Chemical Reactions

  • There are 5 main types of chemical reactions: Combination, Decomposition, Displacement, Double Displacement, and Oxidation-Reduction (Redox).
  • COMBINATION REACTION: Two or more reactants combine to form a single product. A + B → AB.
  • DECOMPOSITION REACTION: A single reactant breaks down into two or more products. AB → A + B. It is the opposite of combination.
3

Effects of Oxidation – Corrosion and Rancidity

  • Corrosion is the slow eating away of metals due to reaction with moisture, oxygen, or acids in the environment.
  • Rusting of iron is the most common example of corrosion: Iron + Water + Oxygen → Rust (hydrated iron oxide, Fe₂O₃·xH₂O).
  • Silver tarnishes to form a black coating (silver sulphide, Ag₂S); copper forms a green coating (copper carbonate/basic copper carbonate).
