Topics in Life Processes

1

What Are Life Processes?

  • Life processes are maintenance functions that must continue even when an organism is resting or sleeping.
  • Molecular movement is the most basic indicator of life – even viruses lack independent molecular movement, which is why their living status is debated.
  • Living structures are highly organised and tend to break down due to environmental effects, so energy is constantly needed to maintain and repair them.
2

Nutrition

  • Nutrition is the process by which organisms obtain and use food for energy, growth, and repair.
  • Two main types: Autotrophic Nutrition (self-feeding) and Heterotrophic Nutrition (dependent on others).
  • Autotrophs include green plants and some bacteria; they make their own food using sunlight and simple inorganic substances.
3

Respiration

  • Respiration is the process of breaking down food (glucose) to release energy for cellular activities.
  • First step (common to all organisms): Glucose (6-carbon) is broken down into Pyruvate (3-carbon) in the cytoplasm.
  • Aerobic respiration: Pyruvate is broken down in the mitochondria using oxygen → CO₂ + H₂O + Energy (ATP). Releases MORE energy.
4

Transportation

  • Transportation in humans involves the circulatory system: Heart, Blood, and Blood Vessels (Arteries, Veins, Capillaries).
  • Blood consists of: Plasma (liquid medium – transports food, CO₂, nitrogenous wastes), RBCs (carry O₂ via haemoglobin), WBCs (immunity), Platelets (clotting).
  • The human heart has FOUR chambers: Right Atrium, Right Ventricle, Left Atrium, Left Ventricle.
