Occurrence of Metals in Nature

  • Oxygen is the most abundant element in the earth's crust, followed by silicon, aluminium, iron and hydrogen.
  • 117 elements are known, and they are divided into metals, non-metals and metalloids.
  • Metals are electropositive elements and form positive ions by losing electrons.

Minerals, Ores and Gangue

  • Compounds of metals found in the earth's crust are called minerals.
  • Ores are minerals from which metals can be extracted profitably.
  • All ores are minerals, but all minerals are not ores.

Concentration or Dressing of Ores

  • Crushing or pulverisation breaks large ore pieces into smaller pieces.
  • Concentration or dressing removes gangue from the ore.
  • Gravity separation or levigation works on the difference in specific gravities of ore and gangue.

Conversion of Ores into Oxides

  • Calcination means heating an ore below its melting point, usually in absence of air.
  • Calcination removes moisture, organic matter and volatile impurities.
