  • Hydrocarbons are compounds made only of carbon and hydrogen.
  • They do not contain functional groups.
  • Hydrocarbons may be acyclic or cyclic.

  • Alkanes are saturated hydrocarbons and are also called paraffins.
  • They form a homologous series with general formula CnH2n+2.
  • Alkanes have only chain isomerism because they do not contain multiple bonds or functional groups.

  • Alkenes are unsaturated hydrocarbons containing one or more double bonds.
  • Alkenes with one double bond have the general formula CnH2n.

  • Alkynes are unsaturated hydrocarbons containing one or more triple bonds.
