1. Why Atoms Combine and the Octet Rule
- Atoms combine to acquire stability and lower potential energy.
- Noble gases are stable because their valence shells are complete.
- Kossel and Lewis proposed that atoms form bonds by gaining, losing, or sharing electrons to achieve noble gas configuration.
2. Ionic Bonding and Ionic Compounds
- An ionic bond is generally formed between a metallic and a non-metallic atom.
- Ionic bonding happens when electronegativity difference is large.
- Electropositive atoms lose electrons and become cations; electronegative atoms gain electrons and become anions.
3. Born-Haber Cycle and Lattice Energy
- Born-Haber cycle represents the energy changes in forming an ionic compound from its elements.
- It is used to calculate lattice energy or heat of formation.
- For sodium chloride, the steps include sublimation of sodium, ionisation of sodium, dissociation of chlorine, electron gain by chlorine, and lattice formation.
4. Covalent Bonding and Covalent Compounds
- A covalent bond is formed by mutual sharing of electrons between atoms of similar or almost similar electronegativity.
- Atoms of groups 14, 15, 16, and 17 commonly form covalent bonds.
- Covalent compounds usually exist as gases, liquids, or soft solids.
Key Concepts
Central concept: Chemical bonding as the force that holds atoms, ions, and molecules together through electron transfer, sharing, delocalisation, and orbital overlap to achieve stability
