Key Topics to Revise

1

1. Basic Idea of Determinants

  • Only square matrices have determinants.
  • A determinant is written as det A or |A|.
  • |A| is read as determinant A, not mod A.
2

2. Minors and Cofactors

  • A minor is obtained by deleting the ith row and jth column of a square matrix.
  • For an order n matrix with n ≥ 2, a minor is a determinant of order n - 1.
  • A cofactor is the signed minor.
3

3. Important Determinant Properties

  • If a row or column is all zeros, the determinant is zero.
  • If any two rows or columns are identical, the determinant is zero.
  • If any two rows or columns are interchanged, the sign of the determinant changes.
4

4. Adjoint of a Matrix

  • Adj A is the transpose of the cofactor matrix of A.
  • Adj A is not the same as A^-1.
  • A(adj A) = (adj A)A = |A|I_n.
