1. Basic Idea of Determinants

  • Only square matrices have determinants.
  • A determinant is written as det A or |A|.
  • |A| is read as determinant A, not mod A.

2. Minors and Cofactors

  • A minor is obtained by deleting the ith row and jth column of a square matrix.
  • For an order n matrix with n ≥ 2, a minor is a determinant of order n - 1.
  • A cofactor is the signed minor.

  • If a row or column is all zeros, the determinant is zero.
