  • The sign pattern alternates in a checkerboard form
  • 2x2 determinants are evaluated directly by cross multiplication
  • 3x3 determinants are usually expanded along the easiest row or column
  • Rows or columns with zeros simplify the calculation

Common Mistakes to Avoid

A determinant can be found for any matrix, including rectangular matrices.

|A| means mod A or absolute value of the matrix.

Minor and cofactor mean the same thing.

Determinant is defined only for square matrices
