  • Matrix = ordered rectangular array of numbers or functions
  • Order of a matrix = number of rows × number of columns
  • Number of elements in an m × n matrix = mn
  • Zero matrix has all entries 0
  • Row matrix has one row
  • Column matrix has one column
  • Equal matrices must have same order and equal corresponding entries
  • Addition and subtraction are defined only for matrices of the same order
  • Scalar multiplication multiplies every entry by the scalar

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Matrix multiplication is commutative, so AB = BA whenever both products are defined.

If AB = O, then either A = O or B = O must be true.

If AB = AC, then B = C must always follow.
