Topics in Geometry

1

Lines: Straight and Curved

  • A straight line goes in one direction and is the shortest path between two points.
  • A curved line bends and is not straight.
  • We use rulers to draw straight lines and round objects like bangles to draw curved lines.
2

2-D Shapes

  • 2-D shapes are flat and have only length and width.
  • They have corners (vertices), sides, and sometimes diagonals.
  • Examples: Triangle, Square, Rectangle, Circle, Oval, Hexagon, Rhombus.
3

3-D Shapes (Solids)

  • 3-D shapes have length, width, and height (thickness).
  • They have faces, edges, and vertices.
  • Examples: Cube, Cuboid, Sphere, Cylinder, Cone.
4

Tangrams and Tessellations

  • Tangram is a Chinese puzzle with 7 pieces — 5 triangles, 1 square, and 1 parallelogram.
  • All 7 pieces must be used without overlapping to form a shape.
  • Tessellation is a pattern made by repeating shapes without gaps or overlaps.
