Topics in Numbers
Place Value and Face Value
- Each digit in a number has a place value based on its position.
- The places from right to left are: Ones (O), Tens (T), Hundreds (H), Thousands (Th), and Ten Thousands (TTh).
- Place value = digit × value of its place (e.g., 5 in hundreds place = 5 × 100 = 500).
Expanded and Compact Form
- Expanded form means writing a number as the sum of the place values of its digits.
- Compact form (or standard form) is the usual way of writing a number.
- If a place has 0, we skip it in expanded form (e.g., 2047 = 2000 + 40 + 7).
Comparing and Arranging Numbers
- To compare two numbers, start from the leftmost digit (highest place).
- If digits are the same, move to the next place on the right.
- Ascending order = smallest to greatest.
Forming Greatest and Smallest Numbers
- To form the greatest number: arrange digits in descending order.
- To form the smallest number: arrange digits in ascending order.
- If 0 is one of the digits, it cannot be placed at the beginning (leftmost).
